We remember our members who are celebrating birthdays this week—Phil Franke, Kevin Linnemeier, Jean Timm, Judy Baumann, Cliff Buuck, Margaret Buuck, Leonard Fuhrmann, Madilyn Baumann, Ryan Freimuth, Nathan Bultemeier, Anna Franke, and Julie Lehman.  We remember our Wyneken cooks, Sharon Franke, Shelly Kiefer, and Penny Albersmeyer and Leslie Lawson who teaches in the East Allen system.  May our loving Savior direct, bless, and guide their lives.

 

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need of His healing hand.  We especially remember Elfurt Blomenberg (Adams Memorial), Lynn Fuhrmann, Jim Riemke, Dick Hileman, and Connie Darnell (Carol Hitzfield’s sister).

 

We remember in our prayers the family and friends of Robert Bultemeier (Don’s brother) who was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 13, and was given Christian burial yesterday.   May the God of all comfort be with those who mourn, reminding them of that great day when all believers will be reunited in heaven.

 

We welcome Rev. Marvin & Harriet Hinkle back to the Friedheim family.  They have transferred to us from St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Logansport.  May the Lord bless them in their new church home.

 

We remember those who are serving our country—Jason Putteet who is in South Korea, Randy McAllister (Fern Riemke’s son and brother of Kim, Terry, and Julie) who is serving in Germany, Brian Moeller, our reservists, Mike Brandt, Cody Kiess (grandson of Gene & Irene Kiess), and Josh Colwell (Tiffany’s husband), as well as Lydia Reynolds (Dick Hileman’s niece), Nic Timm (Lowell & Jean’s son), James Johnson (Jean Timm’s nephew), and Chad Hall (Doris Conrad’s son-in-law).  May the Lord protect and guide them in their missions.

Board of Stewardship’s Food for Thought – Our mission as stewards is to view life as an opportunity to serve, praise, and honor the Lord.  God-pleasing stewardship has to do with being what God in Christ has made us and redeemed us to be: His servants.  “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10).  By grace through faith we have been saved to do the works God has prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:8-10).

Trisha Hockemeyer (547-4744) is May’s “Meals of Grace” coordinator.  Please contact Trisha if you know of someone who could benefit from this ministry of our church.  The freezer is getting a little low.  If you would be willing to donate some food—family dishes or meals for one or two are both needed—for this ministry, it would be much appreciated.  Main dishes, soups, casseroles, applesauce, desserts (anything that freezes well) just need to be marked with a short description and date placed in the freezer.

 

You are invited to the worship service in celebration of the 40^th anniversary of the founding of Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School to be held in the Wyneken gym at 10:30 a.m. today. 

 

This Thursday, May 21, we will celebrate the Lord’s Ascension.  The worship service begins at 7 p.m.  Holy communion will be celebrated.

 

This Wednesday, May 20, the choir will go out for supper at Norm’s Preble Gardens at 6 p.m. that evening.

 

Concordia Theological Seminary will have their baccalaureate service at 10 a.m. in Kramer Chapel on Friday, May 22, with Rev. Benjamin G. Lorenz preaching.  The Rev. Dr. John Nunes, President and CEO of Lutheran World Relief will be the speaker at the graduation ceremony to be held at 6 p.m. on the 22^nd in Kramer Chapel.  The public is invited to attend both services.  Stanley P. Veit of Hoagland, Indiana will receive the Miles Christi Award, given by the Seminary to recognize and honor Lutheran laity who have glorified God through a real contribution in some field of human endeavor and have displayed the characteristics of being good soldiers of Jesus Christ at the graduation ceremony.

Grinsfelder has made two presentations, on January 11 and on April 28, showing a possible way to create a gathering area and place bathrooms on the main floor of the church and to add classroom space, a kitchen area, and offices.   Planning Committee and Council members will be available after services to help explain the concept and answer questions.  There are drawings in available for you to look over.  You can also go to the church’s website, www.zionfriedheim.org, and click on “Church Expansion Proposal Information.”  An artist’s rendition of the proposed expansion from both the northwest and southwest view is available for you.  By clicking on the pictures, an enlarged view can be previewed.  From this site you can go to 1^st floor plan of proposed site, as well as proposals of the basement plan, north elevation, south elevation, and west elevation.  A site plan for the proposed expansion is also included.  Conceptual drawings for a Parish Hall type addition have also been (or will soon be) placed on the website.  You might especially want to check out the Expansion Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) to see if one of your questions is answered there.  There will be one more informational meeting to present these conceptual drawings of a Parish Hall and to take questions.  The second informational meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 31, following the worship service.  Questions or comments should be directed to the following:  Chairman of the Congregation – Mike Conrad (547-4717), Chairman of the Elders – John Nidlinger (724-9920), and Planning Committee Representative – Mike Werling (639-6132).

Are you willing to help with our Sunday School program?  We are looking for an individual who would volunteer to serve as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent for the 2009-2010 school year.  This individual would then become the Sunday School Superintend the following year.  If you have questions or would be willing to be a part of this program, please contact a member of the School Board (Mitch Baumann, Randy Hockemeyer, or Scott Hormann) or our current Sunday School administrators—Kristin Scheumann, our Sunday School Superintendent, or Amy Walker, the Assistant Sunday School Superintendent.  Thanks!

The Adams County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will again participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This event is an 18-hour celebration of life for cancer survivors, a memorial for loved ones lost, and a rally for the community to fight cancer. This year the Relay will be held at Adams Central School in Monroe on Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27.  The Adams County Chapter will be serving BBQ chicken (catered by Nine Mile) on Sunday, May 31.  Tickets can be purchased from any one of our coordinators—Dorothy Heckman, Leesa Heckman, or Betty Sielschott—as well as Shirley Hormann.  Presale tickets are available at a cost of $5 per one-half chicken.  The price will be $6 at the door.  Chicken can be picked up here at Friedheim after church.

 

The Portals of Prayer for July-September 2009 have arrived and can be found in either entranceway of the church.  You may pick up a copy at your convenience.

 

The church picnic is set for Saturday, June 20.  Your help is needed!  Individuals are needed to help set up, take down, organize the food, plan the games, and take care of the drinks.  If you are interested in helping make this wonderful afternoon/evening a reality, please contact a member of the Board of Stewardship—Shirley Drier, Cindy Des Jean, or Lisa Bultemeier.  Thank you!

 

Help!  Someone is need to take over as our Lutheran Home Key Lady (and will be a member of the Lutheran Home Auxiliary).  Donna Hileman had served in this position acting as a liaison between our congregation and Lutheran Home.  Lutheran Home assigns our congregation dates to bring birthday cakes (usually once a year) for the month and to assist residents to their Sunday worship services by pushing wheelchairs (once or twice per year). The Key Lady then asks for donations or assistance for those dates. There is no need for cakes for the remainder of the year; however, our congregation has been assigned July 5 to push wheelchairs.  (The youth group will be unable to help on the 5^th, so other individuals or groups are needed for that day.)  Information concerning upcoming activities (card party, chicken BBQ, ice cream social, garage sale, etc.) that should be publicized also needs to be shared with the church office.  If you would like to serve in this capacity or need more information, please contact Mike Conrad (547-4717) or Pastor Dahling as soon as possible. 

 

The Lutheran Home Auxiliary is sponsoring a chicken barbecue/dinner theater on Friday, June 12, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 6701 S. Anthony Blvd. in Ft. Wayne.  Dinner theater (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Office) show times are 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.  This is a 20- to 25-minute skit, with a lot of humor.  Pre-sale tickets are $6.50 and $7 at the door.  Drive through (½ chicken only) is available from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at a cost of only $4.  Carry outs are available from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.   Tickets are available in the church office. 

 

Would you be willing to serve as our lay delegate to the convention to be held in Ft. Wayne this summer?  The District Convention will be held on June 25 and 26.  If you would be willing to go, please contact Mike Conrad (547-4717) or Pastor Dahling as soon as possible.

 

Although the Morning Glories are taking their “summer” break, there are projects to complete over the summer.  If you like to quilt, there are some baby quilts and wall hangings that need to be done, or, perhaps, you like to embroider.  There are several of these projects (pillowcases, table runners, etc.) that need completed.  All supplies would be furnished.  If you are willing to lend a helping hand, please contact Marlene Conrad or Shirley Buuck.  Thanks!

 

We would like to have another “card shower” for the Groth’s.  Rev. Chuck Groth will be celebrating his birthday on July 21 and we would like to collect birthday cards now through June 7.  It can take a month or more for packages to reach them.  Even though Sunday School is out, perhaps some of the children would be willing to make a card.  They so appreciated those cards the last time.  There will be boxes in either entranceway of the church for you to deposit your card.  Jan Buuck is coordinating this project and she will mail them early in June.  We have just received their May newsletter that the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Mission has decided to move the Groth’s out of Cambodia and back to the States.  They will be moving back some time this summer.  They ask for your encouragement and prayers to see them through this time with grace and a vision of God’s plan.  This is a difficult and painful time for them as they are not yet ready to retire and are looking towards a ministry position in the States.

 

Keep Immanuel House in your thoughts when you are cleaning out your closets.  Your clean, gently used items can be placed in the box in the Parish Hall near the east door and Joe Gorman will deliver them to Immanuel House.  Thank you for your generous support of this ministry.  

 

As a way of assisting the Decatur community during these difficult economic times, Zion Lutheran Church, 1010 W Monroe St, will offer free suppers to anyone in Adams County and the surrounding area on Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. now through, Thursday, June 4.  After the meal, there will be a Bible study available for adults, teens, and children for those who wish to stay.  Donations and helpers are greatly needed as this is not a budgeted project; it is a ministry.  Please contact Sandy Criswell (724-8414) if you can help.

Lutheran Home’s Antique Appraisal Show is on Thursday, May 21, in the Assembly Hall from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Free appraisals will be made by  Tim and Chris Scheerer of McCulloch Systems.    Even if you don’t have anything to be appraised, join in the fun!
